Staying Flu-free in Your Shared Workspace

Spring may be upon us, but our bodies are still catching up. Have you noticed that coughing, sneezing and absences due to flus or colds have been abnormally high this winter? That's because there's been an epidemic. Turns out 2017 has been the worst year for flus and colds in the last 5 years. Yuck.

Thankfully it's getting warmer, but you’re not out of the woods just yet...so it’s important to do what you can to dodge the dreaded flu.

All across Australian workplaces, either the water cooler’s looking rather empty with everyone battling the flu at home, or else everyone’s been feeling the panic and paranoia set in about when it’s going to hit them.

how to stay healthy in the workplace

We are ALL about productivity, but it’s hard to stay on track with your tasks when you’re sniffling and sneezing all day, or in bed with the full-blown flu.

We’ve put together a few simple but easily-forgotten things that help you stay healthy in a co-working space.

  • Paranoia can be healthy and keep you safe

Whether you stay in the office all day or pop in and out, the likelihood is you’re sharing surfaces (AKA germs) with your coworkers. And right now, a handful of these hardworking folk are likely battling the flu.

It’s time to ramp up hygiene in the office kitchen. Wash that communal crockery and cutlery extra well, get hand sanitiser on after using those appliances everyone’s touched.

And when was the last time you wiped down your computer keyboard or phone touch-screen with sanitiser?

  • Build a strong germ-shield

Have you considered getting the flu vaccine? It is late in the season, but it’s still an affordable and relatively effective method of steering clear of the flu, especially when you know you really need to get on top of your to-do list in the and have zero time for lying in bed.

Preventing the flu can also be about trying to stay healthy before you’re sick. Smart meal-prepping may mean the difference between eating a healthy lunch and popping down the road for Maccas.

Try to kick the nail-biting habit and stop touching your face so much, that just invites the germs into your system. Avoid sick people in the office; suggest virtual communications over the web rather than a face-to-face.

  • If you’re sick, be sick

There’s nothing worse than sitting next to the person coughing and sniffing their way through their workday, except, perhaps, for being that person.

It never feels like you have the time to get sick. But you do need to make the time to get better.

Go home. Get into bed. Turn on Netflix. We hope you feel better soon.
